If you use the built in P410i array controller you should make sure you have or get the battery back up so the write cache is enabled or ZFS performance will be horrible. Also it is recommended that you install HP's free hpacucli command to make it easier to enable swapped out hotswap drives.

  • Requires new firmware all around or the installation of an SSD triggers a bug that starts a thermal shutdown
  • iLO works as expected. Download drivers directly from HP along with the scripting toolkit to make bios configuration changes in OS – neat level of integration
  • Expect monthly firmware updates on this platform. HP has a fix it in the field approach
  • There has been some conflict between LSI cards and HPs passive midplane. Every other column of disks must be left vacant or data corruption occurs. Last December LSI and HP were pointing fingers at each other, however, this problem may be resolved. I am no longer in a position where i can risk the data on the disks to find out. I installed both midplanes and half the drive slots are empty at the moment.

No particular Solaris-related problems (all networking and storage components recognized by oi_151a and several older Solaris 10 distros).
Did not test MPxIO with Solaris because this box had no secondary IO controller (had it working with Linux and Windows on other such boxes).

However the stability of remote serial console, remote graphical jKVM and remote media used for installation leaves a lot better to be desired (in comparison with Sun Fire IPMI/ILOM interfaces). May be a pain to install over pure remote-console networking, but this regards any OS we tried with the server. Physical distro media is required very much recommended. After that, all works well =)

  • RMM3 works as expected (as an OEMd service processor from AMI), but no bmc driver support in OI (works in Solaris 11)
  • Onboard SATA/SAS ports work in AHCI mode on the passive midplane but hot plug seems broken. I recommend internal LSI cards in any case.
  • I did not try the serial console, but I would assume that works
  • Hardware throws ECC errors on large memory installations (96GB) up until version 50 of firmware. Recommend v60+
  • System is unable to fast boot and generates an error about a 32bit address. Alter boot config in the repo to do a full boot to work around this problem.

    I'm using OI_148 on an IBM x3655. It's a 2x dual-core Opteron 2216 system based on a ServerWorks chipset with dual Broadcom NeteXtreme II Gigabit Ethernet, ATi-based video, IBM/Adaptec SAS/RAID controller (IBM 8k). The SAS controller does not support JBOD/IT modes, so I'm using it as a boot device only. Primary storage is handled in a DAS-enclosure using a PCIe LSI SAS3801E HBA (IT mode).

    One note: When using BIOS 1.06 I wasn't able to load the OI_148 live CD (nor live USB). This issue extended to Nexenta Core 3.0.1 as well. I did not try Solaris Express II. After reverting to BIOS 1.01 I was able to load the live CD and boot OI_148. After installation I flashed back to BIOS 1.06 and the system booted fine. I'm not sure what aspect of 1.06 created the problem, but it seemed related to a PCI device (likely an on-board component since this was tested prior to adding the LSI controller).

    The system has been stable, but please let me know if there's anything I can do to test and document for this HCL.

      As to the IBM x3655 issue with your BIOS you most likely are running into issues with the UEFI bios IBM uses - even UEFI 1.13 (build date 9/23/2011) exhibits this problem.

      There is a workaround to a) install OI_151a via -kd (most likely prior OI versions too) and b) adjust /etc/system to effect a work around and c) there is even a patch if you want to build illumos from scratch and make a BE (avoide the /etc/system fix).

      Refer to https://www.illumos.org/issues/1439 - hopfully this patch will make it into the next ISO.

    What happened to the old Sep. 26, 2011 server list and/or why was it removed at Servers it seems like it might be worth while to keep some sort of current page with this information as seems to cover running oi_151 and it appears there are over 180 systems that are know to work on this list.   But now we only talk about five (5) systems total.

    From what Jon says, it seems to me that oi151a7 is being used as server operating system at production level.

    If that is the case, I request all OI team to accelerate development process and release the stable version so that the FOSS community can make use of it.

    Beleive me that If the OI is made avaiable as stable system for general use as well for programmers and the software and IT industry in Perticular just like windows server, please believe me, it will be popular and people will shift to it.

      Dude, forget it.  As you've asked repeatedly in other threads, OI isn't going to get a stable branch.  hipster is a fork of the /dev repo and it isn't stable and likely will never be a production release itself.  If you notice, the last post on this page before yours, was 1 year ago.  Many, if not most, pages on this site are not maintained because there is really little to no development occurring in OI. 

      There will likely never be any new features like ZFS encryption or anything like that because there aren't any developers.  If you want a general OS that is maintained and closely resembles OpenSolaris/OI and based on Illumos, then you should look at OmniOS which is developed by OmniTI.  OmniOS is free and also offers commercial support.  Or if you want an Illumos-based hypervisor OS with virtual machines then look at SmartOS.

      But if you're waiting for OI to release a stable repo, then man will have set foot on, or even colonized, Mars first.
