You can get the full repo, ISOs or just pkg update from a previous version.

Enjoy, JT

My Heartiest congratulations to OpenIndiana Team for release of OI151a8.

Thank you, thank you and thank you to all those who have constantly, untiringly worked as a team and brought the release. I have yet no downloaded the ISO.

    Keep it up Sir.

Please tell me how to donate to OI so that I can donate. Though it may not be big amount. However, I shall try to donate generously.

What is the minimum amount one should donate to OI.

Again many many congratulations on this grand success.

Regards and best of luck to OI team.

see http://bugs.openindiana.org/ , after a relatively seamless update I notice some problems with pkg:

just in case you have tried the jds.openindiana.org bits, make sure you have removed it from your pkg publisher and reset as sticky http://pkg.openindiana.org/dev/

Other than that the upgrade seems ok... checking out now why there are a number of things the don't respect i18n... (tooltips in gnome on the menubar for example).

  3. Aug 11, 2013

    Excellent work JT, two questions.

    1. Will someone be updating the primary OI homepage http://openindiana.org/ soon to reflect this recent activity?.  This is probably the non-dev communities biggest grip the get disappointed on lack of quarterly releases and don't know how or want to build illumos themselves.

    2. I noticed a hipster build in the ISO area (I think this a a dev build much like OMniOS bloody).  Could you make a page that explains the key purposes and difference and also (if possible) how to transition between oi_151a8 and hipster (even if it is one-way)?
I look forward to upgrading all my production servers to oi_151a8
    Thanks
    Jon Strabala

The following indicates why the system cannot update to the latest version:

No suitable version of required package pkg://openindiana.org/consolidation/gnome/gnome-incorporation@0.5.11,5.11-0.151.1.8:20130721T125047Z found:
        Reject:  pkg://openindiana.org/consolidation/gnome/gnome-incorporation@0.5.11,5.11-0.151.1.8:20130721T125047Z
Reason:  A version for 'incorporate' dependency on pkg:/runtime/python-25@0.5.11,5.11-0.151.1.8 cannot be found

    $ pkg search -r python-25
    INDEX      ACTION VALUE                             PACKAGE
    pkg.fmri   set    openindiana.org/runtime/python-25 pkg:/runtime/python-25@2.5.4-0.151.1.7

Is there anything I'm missing, or is the .8 version of /runtime/python-25 missing?

  6. Aug 14, 2013

    Congratulations for the release!

I had tried 151a7 + pkg update to /hipster before.

Now on this rig I d/l the live iso of 151a8 and installed. I just don't get why I don't have access to gcc 4.7 and the build-essential metapackage directly like with hipster. I need to change the publisher to replace /dev to /hipster on top of 151a8??? I don't get this. Should I replace the provider altogether with /hipster or add /hipster as another source for pkg.openindiana.org?? Seems when I added /hipster on top of /dev, IPS didn't like that when I updated, exited with an error on some locale package, and I rolled back using zfs to the initial install.

What is it I don't get here?

    Thanks.

      Download last supported flashplayer4solaris from

      http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp_11.2.202.228_archive.zip

(for solaris this is build 223)

unpack libflashplayer.so and place it in ~/.mozilla/plugins

works on both FF 10.x and FF23.x

Gaetano Valboa: Why is this post important, if only saying that upgrade went OK?

  10. Aug 18, 2013

    To,

    The developers of OI:

My installation of OI151a8 was successful, however, Download and Documents folder.are mssing from GNOME:

Why these important folders are removed?

Since OI is basically an excellent platform for development of application programs as well as system programming then why not include following software in the install DVD:

    1. SAMP.
    2. C, C++ and JAVA.
    3. Net Beans IDE.
    4. Couple of good CMS such as Drupal, Vanila, Joomla.
    5. Can GNOME be upgraded??
    6. MySQL and pHp should have latest versions such as mysql 5.5, php 5.4. php 5.4 is through hipster but cannot be installed. How to do it.
    7. How to give pull requests if I need some software not available in Package Manager? Kindly explain what pull request means.
    8. Are we at par with solaris 11.11.11??
    9. Adobe flash player is stil not working. I downloaded from thehttp://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp_11.2.202.228_archive.zip site as suggested by Espen Marinsen but the same is still not working. Crashes.
    10. When can we have stable release? Will it be 32 bit compliant? My PC is 32 bit in which I run WIndows xp and OI151a8 now.

    1. Aug 19, 2013

There are finite resources of only a few people who do any development on OI, so if you want something that isn't there like Vanilla or Drupal, then you need to step up and create the package yourself.

Adobe also fails for me.  If it concerned me I would go back to 151a7.

If you want Gnome upgraded then do it.

I have Netbeans installed because I downloaded it and installed it.

As for question number 10.  It will never happen so stop asking about it!  There was a discussion about it recently on oi-dev and it went nowhere. Recall there are only a few people doing development, so there aren't resources to handle a dev and stable release, besides the experimental hipster that is going on.

You need to realize that OI doesn't have a corporate sponsor.  It doesn't have many (a few) developers.  It doesn't have an income stream.

If you want something then do it.  Join oi-dev and/or oi-discuss and ask question there because you won't get many replies here.  If you want to know the state of OI, then go to the main home page and you will see the twitter feed has been removed and links are all pointing to old pages which are years old.  It isn't maintained.

    Hi,

my honest appreciation to bring the great OpenIndiana a step forward to the next release.

Over the past 2 months I have built and released over 80 packages for OpenIndiana.

more info and how to access the repository can be found at the OpenIndiana UK Support Community:

    http://www.openindiana.co.uk

    The repository is available at:

    http://pkg.openindiana.co.uk

All the packages we have built for the Sun Solaris OS are still available at:

    http://www.sunfreepacks.com

    Please note:

the repository of sunfreepacks.com will be merged to the openindiana.co.uk repository until end of this year (hopefully, when I got the time)..

    Best Regards from Germany!

    Dave.

    Hi Dave,

My sincere gratitude to you for doing much needed boost to OI community. I am not from Software profession, on the contrary I am from Biological Sciences and have developed liking for OpenSolaris in 2010 when I just requested the SUN to send me CD of Opensolaris while I was looking for suitable alternative to windows. However, Opensolaris is far from what windows is today. The striking difference being that Opensolaris is extremely consistent during operation and use. Much much better than windows but not general purpose OS like windows. But still I explored further.

And then OI was launched. It is heartening to note that OI has maintained the development process even though it is at snails pace as Patrik says and replies to me on this page quite often. However, it seems that the OI development work is picking up gradually due to communities like yours and I am sure one day we may have  stable OI which will be accepted by Linux communities.

Thank you for your valuable contribution,

    Ajit Bakre

Dear Openindiana developer community and users,

Well, it seems  that oi development is going at a very slow but steady pace. However, as has been seen in the recent comments, we have to find the objective of OI ---

    1. Whether we want to make it useful for the server hosting platform with GUI capabilities so that we may fine more and more users. This will invariably increase its popularity among website administrators and server market.
    2. Whether we want to make it an excellent development platform and in that case C, C++, JAVA, Lisp,PERL, PHP, mysql developers will embrace it. ( On this front I think OI fares very well. Correct me if I am wrong.
    3. Whether we want to make it also a General Purpose Operating System so that It can be used by all types of users and will increase immensely in popularity and usability.
    4. OR do we want to make it just an experimental OS where we are discussing only the bugs and programming and developing technicalities?
    5. If we have to achieve goal number 4, then I should not write further and stop here only.
    6. HOWEVER, If we want to make it successful as per objective number 1 to 3, in that event, we have to jot down the problems and decide its deadline of completion.
    7. If our community is not large in numbers and  there are more advisers than workers, in that case we can approach to ORACLE and request them to develop the OS as a community OS and make is a FOSS project.

Remember, OI is a descendant of Opensolaris and hence have many killer apps to its credit which are not found in any OS at the moment on the planet earth.
The main killer app is ZFS, virtual network i.e. crossbow, zones. And hence if developed error/ bug free than this OS will give Ubuntu run for its money.

    Best of Luck

    Hi, just a hint.

      I've re-installed a 151_a8 from scratch and noticed I could not get evolution (email-client) adddressbook (e-addressbook-factory) working.

       #pkg install berkeleydb-5

    ..fixed this.

    Keep up the good work.

(anyone found out why evolution cannot click on links anymore? (Operation not supported)(popup-box)

    Hi,

I'm struggling with GVFS, is there any workaround for this?

$ pfexec pkg search -r gvfs
    INDEX      ACTION VALUE                              PACKAGE
    pkg.fmri   set    openindiana.org/library/gnome/gvfs pkg:/library/gnome/gvfs@0.5.11-0.151.1.8
    esm@esmpc:/usr/lib$ pfexec pkg install pkg:/library/gnome/gvfs@0.5.11-0.151.1.8
No updates necessary for this image.

Dear All the OI and Solaris lovers and fans,

    1. A good news: You tube is running successfully in OI151a8 without Adobe Flash Player. I have checked many different videos and from different sites and all work fine with in OI firefox version 10.00 without the need of flashplayer.so.
    2. Apache GUI is really really fantastic thing in OI and Solaris. Why Solaris 11 team is planning to  removed in their next version Solaris 11.2it?? We don't know. It  makes the job of starting multistie very easy.
    3. THE BEST THING IS THAT OI HAS BETTER MEMORY MANAGEMENT THAN Solaris 11.0 which I am using on my another x86 dual core.OI uses hardly 300 to 400 mb whereas Solaris 11.1 uses 600 to 800 mb when regular services are running.
    4. At this moment I am updating OI151a8 to OI151a9 and the memory being used is 986.6 MIB with 2.1 MIB of swap. Please remeber I have got 4.0 gb of RAM and the system is showing 3.7 GB. Where is the remaining?? Can anyone tell me?
    5. Has any one tried to update php to 5.4 or 5.5 by use of OI Hipster repo in OI151a8 or 9?? Please communicate.
