Installed OI from USB drive (switched it to USB 2.0 mode in BIOS). Also selected legacy boot.

Gigabit Ethernet (Intel l218-V) works with e1000g0 driver.

Sound card (ddu detects Intel Haswell-ULT and Intel Lynx Point-LP HD Audio controllers) is detected, but it seems doesn't work.

Video adapter (Intel Haswell-ULT Integrated audio controller, Intel HD 4400) is recognized as VESA, but supports 1600x900 resolution

FN and functional "keys" work  in general.

Wireless adapter (Intel Wireles-N 7260) doesn't work

Trackpad seems to be too sensitive and behaves strange

LenovoThinkPad Edge E335yes, oi_151a5 - oi_151a7

The laptop has no CD drive but can boot off a USB device; to install OI I used a USB HDD with grub4dos in first partition booting an oi_151a5 ISO image and a second 1GB partition with the USB image. Note that the right (yellow USB 2.0) port MUST be used during such setup.

Gigabit Ethernet (Realtek) works, especially (more stable) with an updated gani driver from Free NIC drivers for OpenSolaris project. WiFi (Broadcom BCM4313) works with updated NDIS drivers (see source tarball in based on bcmwl5 64-bit variant of specific Windows driver versions, this supports WEP only. SATA support is strange (sometimes works, sometimes doesn't), so Compatibility mode (IDE) set via BIOS is preferential. USB3 (XHCI) does not work, those two left ports don't even power up a mouse. The USB2 port (right side) works, also with a USB hub. Battery status and model shown OK. Card reader not visible (probably hooked to USB3 chip).

Sound system includes several devices (Realtek audio powering the speakers/mini-jack, and AMD Radeon HDMI audio), both driven as audiohd; in my case Realtek was detected as dsp1/mixer1/audio1/etc. and I had to replace the links (/dev/dsp /dev/audio /dev/mixer etc.) to force it to be used for sound by default. ALSA audio driver mode works, but with hicccups; OSS and SunAudio play music okay, but quite a bit too quiet in my testing (like 10% of the volume on the same system under another OS).

Video adapter (AMD Vision E2 APU including the CPU and Radeon GPU) is not recognized as a "radeon" by "modload /kernel/drv(/amd64)/radeon" nor by X11, but works in correct resolution (1366*768) as "vgatext". Heavy video performs poorly (movies, videocamera tests), but during normal work/reading/browsing/development lags are nearly unnoticeable.

NOTE: The keyboard does not include such keys as Pause/Break and SysRQ/ScrlLock. Some can be emulated (Fn+P, Fn+B, etc.), but I did not manage to find all of them. There is also only a power LED indicator, so you don't see HDD working, CAPS lock, etc. NumLock and at least an emulated numeric keypad are missing altogether.

According to repairs docs, some variants of this laptop model can include an additional MiniPCI socket for WAN (3G modem) or mSATA SSD; my laptop does not have this feature soldered on (or I failed to find it).

Graphics Intel HD 3000 (Sandy Bridge) suffers from bug 8049 on the laptop's primary display if intel Xorg driver is used (vesa is fine but the display then has non-native 1024x768 resolution), but VGA (D-Sub) to external display works correctly. AMD Radeon HD 7670M Graphics requires KMS driver, which we don't have, so VESA only. Unfortunatelly display's native resolution is 1366x768 but the this resolution is not one of VESA modes, so 1024x768 or 800x600 has to be used, which renders the screen blurry. HDMI nor VGA (D-Sub) work.

Integrated Ethernet controller Atheros AR8161 is not supported, nor is Atheros AR9485 mini-PCI WLAN.

What works: ACPI, battery statistics, chipset in general (Intel C216), sound (Intel HDA), SATA disks in AHCI mode, VT-x (tested in illumos KVM), touchpad, USB (both EHCI & xHCI) for input devices and storage.

The Toshiba Tecra M10-19V laptop works great with OI_148. This is one of the models of OpenSolaris laptops sold by Sun. Note that it differs from most other M10s in that it uses nVidia rather than Intel graphics. I have not tested a model with Intel graphics.

I should add that I have not tried getting the fingerprint reader or smartcard reader working under OI or any other Solaris variant.

work out of the box with a dell Latitude E6400

    1. Booted a Dell Latitude E6410 from live USB image of oi_151a and I did not get a full out-of-the box experience. Most functionality seems ok, the Intel 82577LM 1Gbps ethernet interface works, but a laptop without 802.11 is crippled.

HP EliteBook 8540w works except for sound. Like some other HP notbooks (Elitebook 6930p) and other brands (Open)Solaris/SunOS 5.11 boots creating an audio feedback loop (terrible noise). You will have to disable the microphone AND speaker (both!) in the BIOS.

Wifi seems to work (not logged in), modems not tested, ...

Installation of the NVidia driver by creating another boot-environment, mounting it, removing the nvidia packages in that environent and installing the legacy NVDA* packages in that environent, see e.g.

    1. Anonymous

After installation you can disable the sound modules in /etc/system (to enable sound in the BIOS again if you want to use it in another OS like FreeBSD):

      exclude: audio
      exclude: audiohd

Seems this is no longer necessary with OI 151a on both HP EliteBook 8540w and Elitebook 6930p. I have no longer the possibility to test with this hardware to check if sound works.

The Dell Studio 17 works mostly fine with OI 148. Wireless, track pad, even graphics with the ATI graphics card. Only major issue I've noticed is that running bzip2 on a large file the system will crash and reboot - at least this particular Studio 17. Nothing in the logs to indicate why the system enters panic / reboot. RSD

Are there any efforts going on (within the OpenIndiana project or otherwise) to improve support for laptop special keys? There had been some progress inspired by the Toshiba OpenSolaris venture, but for other brands hotkey support is still very poor!
In principle it would be sufficient to have a possibility to recognize those keystrokes and configure a custom script to be executed.

HP DV6500 CTO works great using 151. Drivers were found for the built in webcam and even the Authentec fingerprint reader - but not for the Intel Mobile 965 integrated graphics. (The graphics are working fine, though, with whatever it's using instead.)

I was able to install OI on a new Lenovo W520. However, the WiFi didn't work. The WiFi card is a RealTek 8188ce. RealTek has what it calls a "Unix (Linux)" driver available for download. However, it looks like it's really just for Linux, and I don't have the skills to tweak and compile it for Solaris:

    1. if you can, get or upgrade the Lenovo w520 with Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 (3x3 AGN)

      for supported cards see:

      upgrading Lenovo wifi:

  17. Now I have been using ASUS U24E (Core i5) with Solaris 11. But If someone try Suspend/Resume on this machine with OI, I want to change OI from Solaris11. So is anyone successful for Suspend/Resume?

  18. Cannot make it boot on Dell Precision M4500. Tried even with -k -v -B acpi-user-options=2, but still hangs during CD boot.

I can hear a sound popping from the laptop when the system detects the audio card, then follows the keyboard detection, activates and than stop.

    Any clue?

  19. Now I  bought new notebook, ASUS U36S. And I have been using ASUS U24E. But I can't boot 64bit OI on these 2 systems. I knew these 2 systems are Sandy Brdige beased system. So when will OI support Snady Brdige system?

  20. I just bought an AMD Trinity Laptop from Samsung ( Samsung NP535U4X-S01ID ). It is based on AMD A8-4555. 8GB of RAM

    I tried to install OI151a5

It fails even before gdm takes place.

The last error message is :

    Console login service(s) cannot run

Enter user name for system maintenance (control-d to bypass) :

Since I don't know what username/password is for system maintenance ( tried combination of jack/jack, jack/openindiana, openindiana/openindiana and none of them works )

I press control-d, and it still fails.

I had read this site just for reference :

I guess there is a difference between handling Piledriver APU and Piledriver CPU, or, Dave Koel Meyer was lucky with his hardware

Anyone have similar experience, or have successfully overcome this problem ?

  21. Hi,

Today I installed OI 151a7 on hp Spectre Envy 14. This machine's resolution is 1600x900.

I can use this resolution on this machine. As of now I can't use Wifi N6250 and Suspend/Resume. .

The wifi is Intel Centrino 6250. But workaround driver has no device ID, 88e. I think this is the reason.

The problem is only one below:

After logout, the screen show only white. Therefore I can't login again. So does anyone know the resolution for this?

    Best Regards.

    1. I found this symptom recorded in Bug DB.
