What's New in OpenIndiana Development Build 147

1. Introduction

OpenIndiana oi_147 is the latest release of the OpenIndiana Operating System, a powerful and complete operating environment for users, developers and deployers. OpenIndiana prides itself on being a secure, stable, and highly scalable system. The OpenIndiana OS is open source software and freely re-distributable, and provides all the tools users expect from a modern computing environment. Additional software can easily be installed from online network package repositories.

OpenIndiana oi_147 is built from the OpenSolaris snv_147 codebase for all x86/x64 based platforms.

2. What's new for administrators

Solaris 10 Containers

Solaris 10 Containers are branded zones that host Solaris 10 09/10 (U9) and later user environments. They provide a method for seamlessly migrating Solaris workloads where the zone is running on OpenIndiana.

The "solaris10" branded zone is a complete runtime environment for Solaris 10 applications.

The brand includes the tools required to install a Solaris 10 system image into a non-global zone. A physical-to-virtual (P2V) capability is used to directly migrate an existing Solaris 10 system into a non-global zone on a target system. The brand also supports the tools used to migrate an existing Solaris 10 native zone to a solaris10 non-global zone.

Triple-Parity RAID with ZFS

The need for triple-parity RAID has increased as the disparity between disk capacity and throughput grows. As disks in RAID systems take longer to reconstruct (also known as resilver), the reliability of the total system decreases due to increased periods running in a degraded state should any failures occur. OpenIndiana oi_147 includes triple-parity RAID in ZFS, meeting the needs of a highly-available storage environment. For more detail, see Adam Leventhal's blog.

ZFS now includes the ability to split an existing zpool. Administrators can now extract one disk from each mirrored top-level vdev and use them to create a new pool with an exact copy of the data. The new pool can then be imported on any machine that supports the pool's version.

Save space with ZFS

Deduplication is a feature of modern storage platforms by which varying mechanisms are employed to reduce the amount of total data stored by eliminating and sharing common components. ZFS deduplication support has been added for OpenIndiana oi_147. ZFS deduplication uses checksum based comparison of blocks with optional verification (for example with non-cryptographically secure checksums). Deduplication is performed across the entire ZFS storage pool; administrators can select if individual datasets have deduplication enabled or not. This is useful in mixed-mode environments in which some datasets have highly duplicated data (e.g. virtualized images, home directories, or email folders) and others are unique (e.g. databases).

User and Group Quotas with ZFS

Support for user and group quotas, along with per-uid/gid space tracking, has been added to ZFS with OpenIndiana oi_147. In prior OpenIndiana releases, you could apply quotas and reservations to ZFS file systems to manage and reserve space. Administrators can now set a quota on the amount of space consumed by files that are owned by a particular user or group.

Automated Install images are Bootable!

OpenIndiana oi_147 Automated Install images are now bootable, providing an easy way of installing OpenIndiana on SPARC (and x86) without the requirement of setting up an individual Automated Install server. Boot off a CD, point the system at an AI manifest (or default to the one included in the media) and sit back while your system installs OpenIndiana oi_147. It will even bring you to a shell prompt so you can start experiencing the live OpenIndiana environment straightaway!

Note: The login details for the bootable AI media are user:jack, password:jack and user:root, password:OpenIndiana. However, unlike the OpenIndiana LiveCD, user 'jack' does not have the Primary Administrator profile.

Installation on Extended Partitions and iSCSI devices

It is now possible to install OpenIndiana to logical volumes defined within extended partitions using either the LiveCD or Automated Installer. With this new functionality, you are still limited to a single OpenIndiana partition, whether it is primary or logical. With the inclusion of the GNU Partition Editor on the OpenIndiana oi_147 LiveCD users can resize, create or delete disk partitions and filesystems.

OpenIndiana oi_147 now supports installing to iSCSI targets and iSCSI boot using both the LiveCD and Automated Installer.

Load balancing on OpenIndiana

OpenIndiana oi_147 now includes an integrated load balancer allowing an administrator to use OpenIndiana as an L3/L4 load balancer. This capability can be complimentary to existing higher layer load balancing solutions from different ISVs. The addition includes stateless DSR and NAT operation modes on a variety of load balancing algorithms, a command line and configuration API to configure various features as well as view statistics and other configuration details.

Link protection on OpenIndiana

In many virtualized setups today, it is common for the host administrator to grant exclusive access of a physical link or a vnic to a guest VM. This enables guests to benefit from traffic isolation and improved performance. The downside is that guests are allowed to generate any type of packet, even harmful ones, to the network. Link protection, new to OpenIndiana oi_147, is a new mechanism for preventing potentially malicious or misbehaving guest VMs from sending harmful packets to the network. This feature provides protection against these basic threats: IP, DHCP and mac spoofing; and L2 frame spoofing. Unlike a traditional firewall, link protection does not support inbound filtering or customizable filtering rules. For users with such requirements, a firewall should be used instead.

OpenIndiana Bridging and Tunneling

Bridging is a general layer two (L2 or datalink) technology that is used to connect together separate L2 subnetworks, allowing communication between attached nodes as if only a single subnetwork were in use. Basic ethernet bridging support has been added to OpenIndiana oi_147 using the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP, IEEE 802.1D-1998) and TRILL protocol, as part of the wider RBridges project, providing administration through dladm(1M).

IP tunneling functionality has been reimplemented in OpenIndiana oi_147, delivering a generic LAN driver (iptun) that implements IP tunnel links atop which IP interfaces can be plumbed and managed through dladm(1M). With this new redesign, tunnel links gain functionality common to other links, including link vanity naming (introduced by Project Clearview, link-layer observability using transitional observability tools such as Wireshark and snoop, and the assignment of tunnel links to exclusive stack non-global zones.

COMSTAR targets for iSER, SRP and FCoE

COMSTAR, the software framework that enables you to convert any storage device on an OpenIndiana host into a target device that can be accessed over a storage network, now includes support for a number of protocols; iSCSI Extensions for RDMA (iSER) and SCSI RDMA Protocol (SRP) for hosts that include an InfiniBand Host Channel Adapter, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE).

USB support for VirtualBox on OpenIndiana

OpenIndiana oi_147 has improved its host operating system support for VirtualBox, the popular virtualization solution for x86/x64. OpenIndiana can now proxy USB devices plugged in the host OS to the guest OS, depending on the user's configuration.

To run VirtualBox, you will need to install the virtualbox package from the repository.

For a detailed list of changes, see the Nvidia 256.53 release notes.

Image Packaging System

The network based packaging system, pkg(5), has received a number of improvements in OpenIndiana oi_147 particularly in terms of performance gains. While much of the work has been to the underlying infrastructure including optimizing package dependency and conflict resolution, perhaps the most significant visible change has been the introduction of a new package naming standard with well over 1,500 packages being renamed.

New to IPS in OpenIndiana oi_147 is the ability to support software license acceptance and display for those software packages that require users to manually accept any license terms and conditions for use.

IPS previously supported the ability to specify a repository mirror, where a mirrored repository would be able to provide package file data but require the client to download metadata (manifest and catalog data) from the origin repository. New to OpenIndiana oi_147 is the ability to add multiple origin repositories serving the same data, allowing administrators to add redundancy into any package server infrastructure. During package operations, the client will automatically attempt to select and use the best repository origin if any data needs to be retrieved for that publisher.

Package Manager

Not only has Package Manager been updated to reflect some of the infrastructure changes in IPS, but it also has received several user and performance improvements, such as the ability to save recent searches and the ability to set the priority of publishers and origins. Package Manager now includes the ability to export package selections as .p5i files, allowing you to easily share package selections with your friends and colleagues with a single click install.

CUPS 1.4.2

The Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) has been selected as the default print service, replacing the LP print service, in OpenIndiana oi_147. CUPS support includes a web and graphical interface to manage your printing environment. A system that is running CUPS becomes a host that can accept print requests from client systems, process those requests, and then send them to the appropriate printer. To facilitate CUPS support, a new print-service command has been introduced that provides a mechanism for switching between CUPS print service and the LP print service, including 2 new SMF services.

Gutenprint 5.2.4 print drivers

Gutenprint 5.2.4 offers additional high quality print drivers support for Epson Stylus Pro printers, along with some changes for other Epson printers and support for additional Canon inkjets and PCL laser printers.

Samba 3.5.4

Samba is a suite of programs which use NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) to enable the sharing of files, printers and other information (such as directories of available files and printers). This package provides a Server Message Block or SMB server (also known as a Common Internet File System or CIFS server) which can provide network services to SMB/CIFS clients.

Significant Samba improvements in OpenIndiana oi_147:

  • Internet Protocol version 6 support (IPv6)
  • Support for Windows 2008 (R2) trust relationships.
  • Support for Windows 7 domain members.
  • Support for Active Directory LDAP signing/sealing policy.

  • New NetApi remote management and winbind client C libraries
  • A new graphical user interface for joining Windows Domains

See: http://samba.org/samba/history/samba-3.5.4.html

GNOME Restart Dialog and Fast Reboot

New to OpenIndiana oi_147 is the inclusion of a new feature to the GNOME restart dialog allowing users to easily switch to a different boot environments (BEs) prior to rebooting. The changes also enable you to specify a fast or a slow reboot to any bootable OpenIndiana GRUB entry. Only OpenIndiana boot entries support the fast reboot functionality. For any other boot entries, a slow reboot is automatically performed. OpenIndiana oi_147 also introduces an enhancement to allow a system to save crash dumps in less time, and using less space.

Visual Panels for single system configuration

Visual Panels have now been included in the default installation for OpenIndiana oi_147. Using visual panels, users can now configure a limited set of system tasks - services, shared folders, firewall and core files. Visual panels exist for configuring the Apache web server, Click on this link to automatically install Apache web server visual panel with Package Manager in the network package repository.

Virtual Console Terminals

OpenIndiana now supports switching between X session and virtual console terminals. The service is not yet enabled by default but can easily be enabled, allowing the user to switch between sessions using hotkeys Alt + Ctrl + F#.

New sound for OpenIndiana

The Boomer audio subsystem is a new framework for supporting audio devices in OpenIndiana. It has been designed to support curent and future generation multimedia audio applications and devices. Boomer includes support for a number of new devices, expanding both device and platform support for audio. Boomer also supplies the Open Sound System API which as been made popular on Linux and FreeBSD, with the consequence that many multimedia applications can be supported on OpenIndiana much more easily and a new Device Driver Interface for audio device drivers, so that writing a new device driver or porting one from another operating system can be done with only a modest amount of effort. OpenIndiana oi_147 now supports more audio devices than previous releases, including Via 82C686, Creative Audigy LS, Creative SBP16X, ESS Technology Solo-1 AudioDrive PCI, and Creative EMU10K based audio devices.

Improved Hardware Support

OpenIndiana oi_147 continues to support a wide range of hardware - from laptop and desktop systems to systems deployed in an enterprise environment. As new drivers get developed, support for the Solaris Fault Management (FMA) is also added. Recent additions include FMA support for new chipsets from Intel and AMD, a generic topology enumeration framework for future platform independence within the FMA architecture, and a generic hotplug framework for any hotpluggable bus and migration functionality in virtualization environment through virtual hotplug.

Coming Soon

Even though OpenIndiana dev oi_147 was just released, we're already looking forward to our next release that's due out in the upcoming weeks. Look out for great new projects like the Illumos-patched kernel, improved Opendindiana-based logos and graphics, SPARC platform support, security updates, and a host of new software on our network package repositories.

Thanks are due, in no small part, to the many free and open source communities that helped make this release successful and the latest versions of their software that are included in OpenIndiana oi_147.

Disclaimer: This "What's New" document was mainly written and edited by Ken Mays based on a revision from Glynn Fosters' (aka gman) original work at Sun MicroSystems of the "What's New" draft document for OpenSolaris 2010.03 (in which OpenIndiana 2010.09 unofficially superceded and is based on). Many thanks for the software engineering and development teams at Oracle/Sun, Illumos project, and the OpenIndiana project for making OpenIndiana 2010.09 a success. I have added the what's new document reference of OpenSolaris 2010.05 for historical coverage as well now provided by Oracle.

Can oi_147 run as Xen PV Guest on Linux ?

  2. Sep 15, 2010

    Anonymous

Cannot be installed in Xen PV DomU. So,  not only xVM ( Dom0 support) feature is lost.

DomU support is lost as well.

Are there any plans for getting XEN = xVM on OpenIndiana to be it able act as Dom0 and also as PV domU - as good as in OpenSolaris b134?

I hardly believe , that OI would be able reproduce xVM 3.4.2 at least as OSOL 134,

but DomU support is much easier then Dom0 support,

Kernel & boot_archive should contain xen frontend drivers. Mechanism of hypercalls

implemented into xenified kernel. All this features were present in OSOL 134, however it's also broken

How do we enable the mounting of NTFS on oi_147?  This page mentions system/file-system/ntfsprogs as one of the new packages, but how do we actually use it?  Do we still need to install fuser as on OpenSolaris?

I'm definitely not an expert on this topic, but I think that ntfsprogs a set of command line utilities to directly manage ntfs file partitions. I don't think they integrate with the system. /k

ntfsprogs was integrated some time ago into OpenSolaris. It is probably showing up as new due to the mass package rename when occured a few builds ago where almost every package on the system was given a new name.

ntfsprogs was integrated into OpenSolaris to allow the user to resize existing Windows partitions to make space on their hard disk for OpenSolaris, IIRC. There is no support in OpenSolaris or OpenIndiana for mounting NTFS partitions, since fuse is not included. There is a project to port fuse to (Open)Solaris here -> http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Project+fuse/WebHome where you can get binary packages to enable you to mount NTFS partitions.

I do not know of a version of ntfs-3g that works on Express.  Anyone have other info?

A way to access an NTFS partition in OI is to install VirtualBox, install a minimal XP, create a VMDK (VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk) pointing to the partition & attach it to the VB instance.  Then you can access the partition from XP. It's probably best to do this read-only.  If you need to copy things to OI you can use a shared folder.

Package manager and update manager doesn't work - once the password (root as same as the user) written, the window just goes away, and nothing happens. Anyone can help? I am 1st time in this OS

    1. Dec 09, 2010

See the first item in the technical FAQ here

Once you have set the password so it is not expired you can enter that and the application should be launched.

    When I go through usr/bin and run package manager, this the notice I get;

    "Could not operate on /var/pkg/lock
because of insufficient permissions. Please try the command again using pfexec
    or otherwise increase your privileges."

How do you go from here?

    1. Dec 09, 2010

See above reference to technical FAQ. Ignore references to pfexec in OI unless you have added the relevant profile to your user. (See man pages for profiles)
