A package is being provided for users to test the Intel's 2.9.1 video driver on OpenIndiana oi_151a. The Intel 2.9.1 driver supports MPEG2 XvMC (Video Motion Compensation) on Intel GPUs. series. This feature allows video programs to offload motion compensation and iDCT (Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform) portions of MPEG-2 decoding to the Intel GPU hardware. XvMC greatly reduces CPU utilization when playing back MPEG-2 video. In theory it should also reduce bus bandwidth requirements. Dramatic performance savings are seen when playing HDTV (720p/1080i) and Blue-Ray (1080p) video on laptops or desktops with slow CPUs. The OpenIndiana SFE project provides both current releases of Mplayer and VLC which can playback 1920 x 1080 (1080p) high definition videos on Intel GPUs using XvMC.
