How to Upgrade or Download OpenIndiana oi_151a

Upgrading from OpenSolaris b134 or a previous release of OpenIndiana:

This uses the OpenIndiana snapshot of the OpenSolaris snv_134 dev repository.


pfexec pkg install SUNWipkg SUNWipkg-um SUNWipkg-guipfexec pkg set-publisher -O opensolaris.orgpfexec pkg image-update -vOnce this process completes, you should reboot into the newly created snv_134 boot environment (BE) and proceed with the instructions to upgrade to OpenIndiana.

You can upgrade an existing (x86) OpenSolaris system to OpenIndiana.
From the command line:pfexec pkg set-publisher --non-sticky
pfexec pkg set-publisher -P -O
pfexec pkg image-update -vThis will add OpenIndiana as a new boot environment (BE). You will still be able to use your previous OpenSolaris system until you remove the OpenSolaris BE or upgrade your ZFS pool to a newer version.


If your OpenSolaris b134 console was using a keyboard layout other than "qwerty" please be aware that upon booting into OpenIndiana for the first time, your keyboard layout may be reset to "qwerty".

New features in OpenIndiana oi_151a

OpenIndiana Kernel & Core Userland

OpenIndiana oi_151a is based on a recent revision of the Illumos_gate provided by the Illumos_gate project. Notable changes to the Illumos_gate kernel and core userland since OpenIndiana's oi_148 release includes:

OpenIndiana oi_151a now includes KVM, the open source Kernel-based Virtual Machine, as a basic virtualization solution along with the QEMU package! This KVM port includes virtualization extensions for Intel VT.  Using KVM, a user or system administrator can run multiple virtual machines running unmodified x86_64-based operating system images for Linux, BSD, or Windows images. Each virtual machine has private virtualized hardware: a network card, disk, graphics adapter, etc.

Intel 2011Q3: libKMS and libDRM 2.4.26 library update

A package is being provided for users to test the libkms and libdrm 2.4.26 libraries on oi_151a for the new Intel Graphics 2011Q3 driver update. The libraries of libdrm_radeon and libdrm_nouveau are also provided.

Intel 2.9.1 driver update

A package is being provided for users to test Intel's 2.9.1 2D video driver on OpenIndiana oi_151a. The Intel 2.9.1 driver supports MPEG2 XvMC (X Video Motion Compensation) on Intel GPUs (i.e. we mainly support Intel i740/i810 through Intel HD (Clarkdale/Arrandale) GPUs). This feature allows video programs to offload motion compensation and iDCT (Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform) portions of MPEG-2 decoding to the Intel GPU hardware. XvMC greatly reduces CPU utilization when playing back MPEG-2 video. In theory it should also reduce bus bandwidth requirements. Dramatic performance savings are seen when playing HDTV (720p/1080i) and Blue-Ray (1080p) video on laptops or desktops with slow CPUs. The OpenIndiana SFE project provides both current releases of Mplayer and VLC which can playback 1920 x 1080 (1080p) high definition videos on Intel GPUs using XvMC (ex. mplayer -vo xvmc <video_file>).

To enable XvMC in /etc/X11/xorg.conf add the option:
