Installing OpenIndiana

Download the OpenIndiana DVD or USB image from http://dlc.openindiana.org/ and write it to a disc or USB stick.

Boot your computer with the medium inserted. You may have to change the boot device order in your BIOS configuration.

When you see a menu, press Enter to start OpenIndiana on your computer. As it runs, you will be prompted with a few questions.

You should then be presented with a working desktop. You can use the Device Driver Utility to check if your hardware requires additional drivers.

Click the Install OpenIndiana icon to permanently install OpenIndiana on your computer.

Upgrading from OpenSolaris

You should be running OpenSolaris build 134, the last development release published by Oracle. Upgrading from earlier builds is untested. Upgrading from later builds will NOT work.

From the command line:

  • pfexec pkg set-publisher --non-sticky opensolaris.org
  • pfexec pkg set-publisher -g http://pkg.openindiana.org/dev openindiana.org
  • pfexec pkg set-publisher -P openindiana.org
  • pfexec pkg uninstall entire
  • pfexec pkg image-update

Note: use the -P command to set the preferred repository, otherwise pkg will still look to the opensolaris.org repositories, and will report that there are no updates available when running image-update

Please don't remove (unset) the opensolaris.org publisher at this time.
