This is a list of popular freely-available open source server-related software available through Oracle's Userland-gate consolidation.
Consider it only as a guide for userland software currently being provided for the OpenIndiana distribution. If you have a bug or RFE for any of the software on this list then please review or create a 'New Issue' on bugs.openindiana.org and assign to the 'OI-Userland' team for their review. Any OI distro-related user discussions are usually handled over in the openindiana-discuss mailing list or openindiana IRC channel.

It would be very cool & useful If will be a suggestion fraction on this website for adding new features like, in this case "popular software":
I would like to easy install and compile a package with a command like "portinstall/emerge foo_packagename" or why not "indiana foo_packagename", some customization option's would be awsome like adding mmx, sse etc. It seem's there is already a binary install manager but...
Andrew Stormont
Keep an eye on stormos-next then: https://github.com/stormos-next It's my attempt at a Gentoo/Illumos port.

vlc is in some cases better than Quicktime/DVD-player on Mac OS X - that might point how good it is...

Can Qt4 be included as part of the standard OpenIndiana build?
Anonymous
It would be usefull if there was a howto on this page on where to find/install the packages without having to use using package manager.
At the very least in the real world of lots of servers you would want to download the package once and test/deploy to servers from an internal network, not have every server instance use package manager to go searching repositories...
And as servers are generally firewalled anyway... well I can't use package manager; I just want a package, and I can't find any references anywhere to anything that oesn't need package manager, sigh. Guess I'm back to trying to install from sunfreeware.com
Jon Tibble
The pkg man page is quite detailed.
In particular...

what is publisher address for this versions of software??
I have publishers http://pkg.openindiana.org/dev/ and http://pkg.openindiana.org/legacy/

Do you use sunssh as default?
If so, why not use openssh? I think this would be preferable to most users.
Also, I would be interested to know if there is any specific reasons you choose sunssh?

The use of ForceCommand and ForceCommand in a Match subsection would be the primary reason to use openssh instead of sunssh that I can think of.

Any chances of including vsftpd into OI repository?

And include Webalizer please!

Please add binaries for samba 4(RC2 at this time of writing), as it is very difficult to build on OpenIndiana! It's the only thing keeping me from switching over.
vsftpd is also a must.
Ken Mays
Samba 4.0rc2 builds on oi_151a and is very stable in production usage as validated by other system administrators. Fill out a new issue request in: https://www.illumos.org/projects/oi-sfe/issues for a future binary release. You can also contact third-party package maintainers like OpenCSW or unixpackages.com (sunfreeware) for custom builds.
Vsftpd 3.0.0 is already provided through OpenCSW. You can use that build or ask the package maintainer (i.e. Yann) to help build your own version on oi_151a. See: http://www.opencsw.org/packages/vsftpd/ and you can unixpackages.com (sunfreeware) or other package ISVs for custom builds.
aleph
Thanks for the OpenCSW recommendation. As for samba 4.0rc2, my build error was on "Compiling IDL librpc/idl/atsvc.idl" which led to: "sh: -_: unknown option" errors.

The list seems cool enough and comments provides much guideline for a newbie.
Open Indiana is real replacement of Open Solaris.
I would like to see kicad, gEDA, QUCS in our package list. Also vsftpd and Drupal.
Does OI supports Cpanel for websites management.
ajit bakre
Can any one tell me how to add above software in the OI repositories??
Secondly, why the OpenSXCE links and info removed from the OI??
Can we approach cannonical to provide funding for OI and OpenSXCE, Just like Ubuntu.
All you gentelmen over here, please believe me that
OI and SOlaris 111111 are today very scalable and powerful operating systems, which are server ready, having excellent development environment.
Only we have to add better Multimedia capabilities such as Bunshi and other plugins for totem movie player.
Aha, one more thing, there is very nice GUI for mysql in Opensolaris 134. Can't we have the same or it is closed source??
Thanks for providing such a nice plateform to express my views for OI.
Lastly others such as omni OS, Illumian, SmartOS, can they not add gui capabilities to their OS !! It would be really great.

OmniOS is a commercial venture that is server-based only. They sell support, but from the prices I've seen it is the same price if you bought support from Oracle. Unless you have a hatred of Oracle, I don't know why you wouldn't buy support from those who have access to the original SunOS code. Anyone can correct me if I'm incorrect about OmniOS support prices.
SmartOS is a hypervisor only and does not offer a gui, because it is a hypervisor only.
OpenSXCE is available at opensxce.org .
I've wondered why OpenIndiana has never opened a foundation for funding like the FreeBSD and NetBSD Foundations, but there must have been a reason. My information is there are only a couple - or at best a few - developers that work on OI, so any changes are few and far between, so asking for Gnome to be updated is probably only going to be done if you do it yourself.

ajit,
Until yesterday, I had the same question: where does one get these releases of the software?
I found that the repository at pkg.openindiana.org/dev has not been maintained since 6 Oct 2012. Surf to that site to see so. The current repository seems to be pkg.openindiana.org/hipster. Hipster was late updated yesterday 1 July 2013.
In package manager, I have set the url for publisher openindiana.org to pkg.openindiana.org/hipster. When I did so, over 900 updates were waiting for me, including all of the versions listed above in Ken Mays' posting.
Two notes about my updating yesterday: (1) time-admin is now broken. (2) the most current version of java must be downloaded directly from oracle and installed manually.
Cheers
gpatrick
hipster is a fork of the dev repo and is not stable at this point. It is supposed to have a rolling update of Illumos via git, but I don't know if that has been completed.
